An astute commenter (and Nathan Moore) points out the similarities in Steve Gill’s most recent opinion piece in the Nashville City Paper and an article entitled, “Hillary Clinton’s Fix,” by Al Kamen of The Washington Post.

In light of Milwaukee Magazine’s recently published must read by an ex-conservative talk radio program director, which confirms that “Conservative talk show hosts would receive daily talking points e-mails from the Bush White House, the Republican National Committee and, during election years, GOP campaign operations,” is it any wonder that certain talk show hosts find it difficult to originate a thought?

What’s so chilling about the article, besides it’s decidedly confessional tone (it was their coverage of Katrina that finally made the author “see the light” and move on to a less soul-killing job), is that you can easily replace the name of the Milwaukee conservative talker that is its focus, “Charlie Sykes,” with local conservative talkers “Steve Gill” or “Phil Valentine.” Go ahead. Try it:

To begin with, talk show hosts such as [Charlie Sykes]…are popular and powerful because they appeal to a segment of the population that feels disenfranchised and even victimized by the media. These people believe the media are predominantly staffed by and consistently reflect the views of social liberals. This view is by now so long-held and deep-rooted, it has evolved into part of virtually every conservative’s DNA.

and

The second strategy, The Preemptive Strike, is used when a host knows that news reflecting poorly on conservative dogma is about to break or become more widespread. When news of the alleged massacre at Haditha first trickled out in the summer of 2006, not even Iraq War chest-thumper [Charlie Sykes] would defend the U.S. Marines accused of killing innocent civilians in the Iraqi village. So he spent lots of air time criticizing how the “mainstream media” was sure to sensationalize the story in the coming weeks. [Charlie] would kill the messengers before any message had even been delivered.

and

Then along came the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. Journalists risked their lives to save others as the storm hit the Gulf Coast. Afterward, journalists endured the stench and the filth to chronicle the events for a stunned world. Then they documented the monumental government incompetence for an outraged nation. These journalists became voices for the voiceless victims, pressing government officials to get help to those who needed it.

Yet, while New Orleans residents were still screaming for help from the rooftops of their flooded homes, journalists were targeted by talk show hosts, [Charlie] and [Wagner] among them. Not the government, but journalists. Stories detailing the federal government’s obvious slowness and inefficiency were part of an “angry left” conspiracy, they said. Talk show hosts who used e-mailed talking points from the conservative spin machine proclaimed the Katrina stories were part of a liberal “media template.” The irony would have been laughable if the story wasn’t so serious.

and

But the key reason talk radio succeeds is because its hosts can exploit the fears and perceived victimization of a large swath of conservative-leaning listeners. And they feel victimized because many liberals and moderates have ignored or trivialized their concerns and have stereotyped these Americans as uncaring curmudgeons.

Because of that, there will always be listeners who believe that [Charlie Sykes], [Jeff Wagner] and their compatriots are the only members of the media who truly care about them.

Less plagarism than formula, I think.

Why Do Right Wing Talk Radio Hosts Hate Democracy?

There’s a Russia-Georgia conflict meme working its way through conservative talk radio that, until recently, I had shrugged off as juvenile. It wasn’t until our local shill wrote about it last week in the City Paper and repeated it ad nauseum on his show today that I was struck with how much it reveals a deep-rooted misunderstanding and hatred of democracy.

The basic idea behind the coordinated attack – besides distracting the American people from John McCain’s foreign policy blunders and lobbyist problems – is to demonize U.S. anti-war protesters by accusing them of being “anti-american.” If they were real anti-war protesters, the meme goes, then they would have taken to the streets to protest the “unprovoked” Russian attack on Georgia. Instead, because “the anti-war flag burners been so slow to mobilize,” it must mean that they don’t hate war, but rather, they just hate America.

They’re wrong, of course, and in typical right-wing Rovian fashion, they accuse their target of what they themselves actually feel – a hatred for our country.

How else do you explain their attack on these true patriots who, by taking to the streets, continue a long tradition of peaceably assembling “to petition the Government for a redress of grievances?” Protesting is one of the cornerstones of our democracy – an important tradition sealed in the First Amendment of our Constitution and handed down from generation to generation. It’s as American as free speech, freedom of religion, and a free press.

American citizens who take to the streets aren’t motivated by blind, ideologically-driven loyalties. Instead, they believe in the power of our democracy and the concept that accountability moments should come every day – not just once every four years.

Public demonstrations. Protest marches. Political rallies. Teach-ins. Pickets. Non-violent resistance. All examples of a healthy democracy. With this in mind you have to wonder, why do right-wing radio talk show hosts hate our freedom?

Steve Gill’s Gas Problem

Steve Gill’s latest thesis: Democrats are to blame for high gasoline prices since “The average price of gasoline hit $3.33 a gallon last week, a stunning $1.14 higher than it was when the Democrats took control of the U.S. House and Senate…” in 2006.

So what does it mean that the average price of gas rose a stunning $1.50 between January 2001 and August 2006 when Republicans had control of both Congress and the White House?

Oh, and, according to Gill, Democrats are also to blame for the recession and have “cost homeowners trillions of dollars in equity in their homes, pushed up the unemployment rate and obliterated consumer confidence.” All these pronouncements even though we’ve had almost 7 years of Republican dominated rule and were well on our way to fiscal trouble back in 2006.

Mmmmmm…I love the smell of intellectual dishonesty in the morning…

Gill and Liberadio(!) Announce Radio Partnership

Mary Mancini and Freddie O’Connell of Liberadio(!), Nashville’s only liberal talk radio show, are pleased to announce a radio partnership with long-time conservative talk show host, Steve Gill. The new political talk radio show, “Right Hook, Left Jab” will broadcast live on WRVU 91.1 FM, every Saturday morning from 9:00 – 11:00 am.

“I’m looking forward to going mano-a-womano with Steve,” said Liberadio(!) co-host, Mary Mancini, “and to have Freddie there with his special commentary and smelling salts.”

“We see that the country is moving away from hyper-partisanship and towards reason and reconciliation and, frankly, it’s painful,” added O’Connell, “We’re going to keep intolerance alive if it kills us.”

Said Gill, “Should be fun. I hear O’Connell’s a bleeder.”

Liberadio(!) and Steve Gill will also take their partnership to Nashville area students. The trio will host a weekly spring seminar at Belmont University, where Gill was an adjunct faculty member from 1991 to 2004. The inaugural lecture in the series, ‘Politics and Pop Music: Country vs. Yacht Rock — Right Hooks, Left Smooth,’ will be held on April 10. The discussion will include special guest panelists Belmont alumnus Vince Gill and Steve Porcaro of Toto.

Listen to “Right Hook, Left Jab,” every Saturday on WRVU 91.1 FM, from 9:00 until 11:00 am.
