Call the wahhhhbulance. Fox News is whining because the White House is calling them out and forcing them to live in the reality-based community. We’re a news organization, they cry. Not so fast, says Media Matters, who just released a video destroying network’s defense of its straight news programming:

I agree that FOX NEWS is biased towards sanity. I also believe Obama is biased towards the worthless.

  2. Dean says:

eldano: very good point about extremes on both sides.

Eric: 2 a.m. in the morning to watch Fox News? Let me get back to you on that.

  3. Eric O'Daire says:

    That’s in the a.m.

  4. Eric O'Daire says:

Every sane person in the United States should watch the show “Red Eye” on Fox News. It’s the only news show I can stand, and it comes on at 2:00 (3 eastern time). It’s a great show!

  5. eldano says:

To be fair, I’d say that reason and thought don’t carry much currency with *any* extreme. And Fox news can be as biased as it wants, just stop pretending to get so offended when you get called on it. It’s run by Roger Ailes for Pete’s sake!

The indignation is just designed to make more money by riling up it’s core audience. I think Obama will get along just fine without them.

  6. Dean says:

“He really is committed to working with those who have opposing ideas. They just won’t work with him to let him prove it.”

Very true, eldano. Kind of goes to the whole health-care thing. He WANTED bipartisanship, but those who run the GOP have decided bipartisanship doesn’t serve their best interests. To paraphrase an old line, “You can always tell a Tea Partier; you just can’t tell them much.”

Reason and thought don’t seem to carry much currency with the extreme right. Do you think that’s why we don’t see much of it on Fox News?

  7. eldano says:

You forgot to point out my two favorite liberal news sources: NPR and Comedy Central! I don’t know from MSNBC (I apparently can’t watch any TV news), but I seriously doubt that Fox would treat Obama with any kind of respect. Seriously, what would he have to gain from appearing on that network? Those who watch it exclusively are pretty set against anything he’d say. Which is a shame, because he really is committed to working with those who have opposing ideas. They just won’t work with him to let him prove it.

  8. Dean says:

MM doesn’t merely read things back — it offers full videos of what was said. Not only for Fox, but for CBS, MSNBC, CNN, NYT and others. And it’s not just about “playing ball” — I hear a lot of criticism of this administration on other networks. But those organizations play by the rules and standards of journalism. They at least attempt fair play. Fox really doesn’t, because there is more money to be made in hyperbole than there is in news-gathering.

While Fox played up ACORN and Van Jones — both legitimate stories, but hardly meriting wall-to-wall coverage — Fox ignored the attorney-firing scandal and Rove’s involvement in the Val Plame outing. Have they even touched on the KBR-Gang Rape story and the subsequent Franken amendment?

Both Fox and MSNBC have their own agendas. Fox’s seems to be a 24/7 thing. MSNBC’s is restricted to primetime. Fox has a smattering of liberals. MSNBC’s morning show bears the name of a conservative.

  9. Shawn says:

Mary, I’m not questioning if Media Matters quoted them verbatim, or if they actually said what they say they did (I’m sure they did), but anyone who has half a brain knows that a short yet accurate quote can be twisted in many different ways….just ask any “wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experience”. And using an MSNBC host and a college professor (who is also a regular contributor to The Nation) to defend ACORN? Again, find me an *unbiased* source. That’s like me citing Chris Wallace and Bill Kristol in a story defending the invasion of Iraq and the lies that were spread about that.

MM is a hack organization. They do the same thing Rush, Hannity and the others do (Yes, I think those guys are hacks too). How many times have you heard Hannity or Rush just say “I’m just reading what they said here!”

If Fox’s bias bothers MM because they want a more honest, less biased news media, they should start with the man in the mirror. If all the media would report the news and keep their own opinions out of it, biased outliers might lose their appeal. Conservatives are glad to finally have some alternatives in the media. Like Mark Twain said, “If you don’t read the news, you’re uninformed, and if you do, you’re misinformed.” Obama and his cronies are upset that somebody won’t play ball with them, so they’re taking their ball and going home.

  10. Kristie says:

Mary, you are quick to call someone a liar…

I believe people have pointed out many times that you lied, without response.

    LIAR..

  11. Mary Mancini says:

Shawn, So you too believe that reality has a liberal bias? I mean, how else could you accuse Media Matters, who basicaly transcribe what Limbaugh, Beck, Savage, Fox News, et. al. say word for word without comment? All they do is point out the lies and intellectual dishonesty of the aforementioned screaming tightie righties using their own words.

And here’s a Rachel Maddow of MSNBC addressing the ACORN issue. Enjoy!

Sept. 24: Rachel Maddow is joined by Occidental College politics professor Peter Dreier, who authored a study on how myths about ACORN were manufactured and how easily the mainstream media – not just the right wing media – was led into reporting falsehoods.

  12. Shawn says:

….and quoting Media Matters as an unbiased source of truth in media is like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse (pardon the pun). They are a blatantly liberal organization.

Yes, Fox is on the right. So is the WSJ Editorial page, and the Washington Times. There, you’ve uncovered the “vast right-wing conspiracy”. Now, let’s take a look at the news organizations that lean the other way (in a noticeable way)…MSNBC, CBS, NBC, CNN, New York Times, Boston Globe, LA Times, Atlanta Journal-Constituion….should I go on? Why is it driving the libs so nuts that there is a voice on the other side? Are they *that* used to having the bully pulpit all to themselves? Why are they being such crybabies about Fox?

  13. Shawn says:

Liberals that appear regularly on Fox – Juan Williams, A.B. Stoddard, Kirsten Powers, Mara Liasson, Charlie Rangel (semi-regular guest on O’Reilly).

Others appear on different shows periodically. I would say that MSNBC is the same thing as Fox on the left. I just think it’s hilarious that they report real stories that everyone else is ignoring, and rather than defend the substance of those stories (Van Jones, ACORN), the libs attack the network as being biased. When CBS, MSNBC, et. al. were doing it to Bush I don’t recall Bush calling them out and denying them access, and I don’t recall anyone pointing out bias at those networks (even though it is WIDELY known that about 85% of news outlets lean left and consistently endorse Democrat candidates).

  14. Ryan says:

“And until you can show me where Fox’s counterbalance is, then the only conclusion is that they do take it to an extreme. Simply put: are there any consistent progressive voices on Fox? And if not, why not?”

I was responding to your question.. that is all. Even with the conjuction at the beginning of the sentence.

There are more than this one liberal on Fox’s payroll.. I’m sure.

  15. Dean says:

David Corn’s full-time job is with Mother Jones magazine. His appearances on Fox are hardly equitable to Buchanan’s on MSNBC, much less Scarborough’s three-hour show that bears his name.

  16. Ryan says:

Dean, I’m not sure.. I would say week-daily… I don’t know how many hours per week, but he is a full time employee.

  17. Dean says:

How regular is David Corn? Every day for three hours?

  18. Ryan says:

Dean, David Corn is a regular columnist on Fox News.. as liberal as they come.

  19. Dean says:

“Because progressive voices are voices of lost people.”

I have no idea what that means. But that’s OK — it made me laugh, and it’s been a rough couple of days. Thanks.

  20. Ryan says:

    My answer is…

Because progressive voices are voices of lost people.

I don’t watch Fox News, so I can’t help you on that, seriously.

  21. Dean says:

If you’re going to use quotations, do it accurately.

And until you can show me where Fox’s counterbalance is, then the only conclusion is that they do take it to an extreme. Simply put: are there any consistent progressive voices on Fox? And if not, why not?

  22. Ryan says:

Dean.. I love how the stations you watch “lean left”.. and Fox takes news to an extreme (since they are on the right side of things), and should be scolded.

    That is funny.

  23. Dean says:

Let’s not equate Fox and MSNBC. MSNBC’s morning show is hosted by Joe Scarborough, a conservative. Pat Buchanan is on there all the time. And even Olbermann and Maddow have made their differences with the Obama administration quite clear. MSNBC might tilt liberal, but there are plenty of conservative and moderate voices on there. And whereas MSNBC is very slanted at night, its daytime stuff is down the middle for the most part.

Fox, except for some rare Shep Smith commentaries, is ruby-red. For anyone who has ever seen that organization’s internal memos, the administration’s assertion was not news. All news organizations have their own agendas, but Fox takes it to an extreme.

  24. eldano says:

I couldn’t sleep last night so I tried watching Hannity. I watched for about 5 minutes. It was so devoid of information that I couldn’t take it. It was just them complaining about how the administration is so busy attacking Fox News that they haven’t been able to fix Afghanistan yet. Really? Nice argument, that’s very reasonable.

  25. Ryan says:

So… when Fox shows news about something that MSNBC doesn’t show, that makes them a political organization?

I don’t get it, but then again, I hardly ever understand when you post someone else’s thoughts without elaboration..
