Mary, unemployment is at 9.5%… do you remember President Obama saying if we didn’t pass the stimulus package that that number would jump to *gasp* 8%??
I thought he meant the number wouldn’t get to 8% with the stimulus, not that it would go 1.5% higher in 6 months..
you lied, again
A) It’s generally hard to tell whether the number of jobs lost (or not created) would have been there without the stimulus.
B) Much of the stimulus money hasn’t actually been spent yet. The money that has is just starting to go into recirculation.
C) The most direct stimulus effect has been by the (minor) reduction in payroll withholdings. Are tax cuts not helping?
D) I hope that really soon we can start arguing over who is responsible for the improved economy. That would be a nice argument to have.
Mr. Dan.. amen.. I want the economy to recover, as well.
It will be nearly impossible to tell what made the economy recover (1+ years from the original stimulus)..
Of course, I believe the free market would have been a much better solution.. Maybe it would have been more harsh for some companies, but some of them probably deserved bankruptcy instead of government money.
Mary says the stimulus works.. when obviously.. it hasn’t cured unemployment. It seems to me if the conversation is stimulus related to unemployment.. It has made it worse, since it has gone up….
So I haven’t been around for a while. I had to go to Ireland for my uncle’s funeral. God rest his soul. But I have one thing to say. Two drinks on my tab to the one that answers this question CORRECTLY: If the stimulus works, how come businesses are still laying off employees in order to save money?
Eric, it is because we haven’t spent ALL of the stimulus money yet. We need more bailout money! Hurry! Hurry! Before it is too late!
We haven’t even spent 5 percent of it. I still say evaluating the stimulus is like evaluating a baseball trade, a recruiting class or an NFL draft: Give it time. If the economy is like this in 12 months, the GOP might get the House back. If it improves and keeps improving, you might not get it — or the White House — back for long time.
Ryan, I owe you two drinks. Thank you for that answer. It was just what I was looking for. By the way, my cousin is moving to the states because his medical issues could not be solved in Ireland. And who says we don’t have a good health care system?
