The Nobel Peace Prize committee is in a good mood. Now might be a good time to ask them if you can borrow the car or stay out past curfew.

The Nobel Committee announced in Oslo that it has awarded the annual peace prize to Barack Obama, just nine months into his presidency, “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

The award cited in particular Mr. Obama’s effort to reduce the world’s nuclear arsenal. “He has created a new international climate,” the committee said….

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said in its citation. “His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.”…

“We are not awarding the prize for what may happen in the future, but for what he has done in the previous year,” Mr. Jagland said. “We would hope this will enhance what he is trying to do.”

  1. Ryan says:

eldano, I thought the exact same thing when I heard he won. “Wonder who he will donate that money too?”

If he would have donated it to the NAACP would he be racist?

  2. eldano says:

If he wanted to rub the right’s nose in it, he would donate the winnings to ACORN. Now THAT would be funny. I think Glenn Beck’s head would explode.

  3. Dean says:

I’m surprised he won it. But I think it also speaks volumes as to how poorly the previous administration was perceived when it came to diplomacy.

And, yes, he has perpetuated the policies in Iraq and Afghanistan. But I think he has completely changed the game — for the good — when it comes to engaging our allies and enemies.

While I can already read Ryan’s charge that progressives are too pre-occupied with Bush’s foibles, they also can’t be ignored. It would be like blaming UT’s losing record solely on Lane Kiffin, or placing Vanderbilt’s 26-year record of football ineptitude solely on Bobby Johnson.

  4. Ryan says:

I think President Obama deserves the award..

Escalating the war on terror in Iraq (per Bush’s surge), and more than likely devoting many more millions of dollars and troops to Afghanistan.. seems really peaceful to me..

Dang.. Jimmy Carter won it.. he was a great president.

PS. Alfred Nobel would roll over in his grave if he knew what a joke this award has become.

  5. Mary Mancini says:

Boy, Joe, you sure are reading a lot into my post.

And can you explain a little further what makes the entire premise for the Nobel Peace Prize “a fraud?”

And one more thing, I’m not sure how many times you need to hear it before it sinks in, but I’ll state it again for you – not everyone who criticizes President Obama is a racist, but there are some who criticize the president solely based on the color of his skin.

  6. You know the world has been turned upside-down when liberals other than Jon Stewart and Lewis Black mock their own institutions and awards. Where was this outrage when algore won it?

He was certainly no more deserving (and probably less so) given the entire premise for his award is a fraud. Therefore, it seems liberals who mock this award to President Obama do so because of their latent racism.
