Tre Hargett Interview

My Grandma Angie always used to say, “Extend the invitation. If they come, they come.” Not sure why anyone would turn down an invite from my Grandma whose meatballs were like buttah, but I guess I can understand why Secretary of State Tre Hargett might turn down our invite for an interview. I haven’t written or said very nice things about Mr. Hargett’s reasons for advocating for the repeal delay of the Tennessee Voter Confidence Act or about his intention to suppress the vote. But when I called his office on Tuesday to follow up on our email request for the interview, his communications director asked if perhaps it would have been better if I had asked an interview prior to writing negatively about Mr. Hargett’s position on secure and verifiable elections on the blog or talking about it on the radio show.

Maybe. But there is precedent for this kind of thing. You know, not agreeing with someone on policy, talking about it on the air, inviting the person with whom you disagree to come on the air for an interview, and that person accepting the invitation.

Former Tennessee Democratic Party chairman Gray Sasser used to appear on Steve Gill’s show all the time. More recently, Congressman Jim Cooper went on The Ralph Bristol Show on conservative talk station 99.7 WWTN even though Mr. Bristol certainly doesn’t agree with any Democrats on health care reform. And last night we learned that faux-public interest lobbyist Rick Berman has accepted an invitation to appear on The Rachel Maddow Show next week even though she’s been exposing his deceptive practices and suspect corporate ties for weeks now.

So, the invitation stands for Mr. Hargett: come on Liberadio(!) to talk about secure and verifiable elections.

If he accepts, I’ll even make him some of my Grandma’s meatballs.

Mary, no one wants to come on your show..

Not becaue you are a liberal, or because you talked about them..

It is because no one listens to the show, and it would be a waste of a perfectly good morning.

Ralph Bristol doesn’t bash people like you do.. He may speak a little truth hear and there, but he certainly doesn’t diminish someone’s job (or the way they do their job).. like you have with Mr. Hargett. You see.. there is a precedent here.. learn how to treat people, then you may get a notable guest. Until then, you are going to be spinning your wheels.

  4. Aunt B. says:

Ten dollars says that Ryan’s last name is Hargett.

  5. Number9 says:

It may have something to do with the shrillness. I have heard your program. It is brutal.

  6. Mary Mancini says:

There’s a ton of speculation on what Ryan’s last name is. I just wish he would tell us already!

  7. Ryan says:

Mary, its amazing how many people your fans think I am. Anyone that disagrees must have a personal attachment to the person you disagree with… crazy

  8. Mary Mancini says:

My question for Ryan and #9 is, do you think it’s right to advocate policy that does not support secure and verifiable elections? If not, then I think you should be asking the Secretary of State the same questions I want to ask him – Can you prove that the votes of Tennesseans counted by touch-screen electronic voting machines are counted properly? Do you have access to the counting software inside the machines? If two counties in Tennessee and 49 other states are using optical scan machines to count paper ballots without incident, why can’t the rest of Tennessee? What does a recount look like using touch-screen electronic voting machines? Etc. etc.

Shrill or not, a large audience or not, these are questions that should be asked and answered by the man in charge of our elections. If you don’t want to hear them asked on my show, then send the man an email or call his office.

  9. Mary Mancini says:

Ryan – Which is it, I have a lot of fans or no one listens to the show. C’mon and pick a side – we’re at war!

  11. Aunt B. says:

Wait, Ryan. So you’re saying that you DON’T have any personal ties to Hargett, you just have nothing better to do with your life than to haunt the website of a duo you don’t like reminding them how much they suck?

That’s even sadder and more hilarious than I thought.

At least there’s some honor in defending your family.

  12. Number9 says:

Nothing wrong with the questions. I do not like the voting system we have. But people will not appear on shows they feel are prejudicial. Your show is advocacy driven. There is a market for that and you do well in that market. But it is a niche market. I don’t think he would have appeared on your show any way. But they gave you a creative excuse. Does Hargett even appear on Gill’s show?

  13. I think this would make for a great interview.

Here’s Ryan’s Craigslist advertisement – work must be slow, since all he seems to do is troll around on this board.

I’m more than happy to leave Ryan’s listing up as a free advertisement if he doesn’t mind. As a small business owner, there’s nothing wrong with trying to increase his revenue.

  16. Ryan says:

Work isn’t slow.. thank you for the free advertising.

  17. Lola says:

    Ryan,

If work isn’t slow – why isn’t your website up and running? blackwellsirrigation.net is what your craigslist says, yet it isn’t active. Didn’t pay your bill? I think you need to re-examine your priorities, Ryan.

  18. Ryan says:

There is no website on craigslist.. Dont know where you got that.. thank you for being concerned, though..

  19. Lola says:
