Senator Lowe Finney

Senator Lowe Finney

Newly elected Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Lowe Finney (D-Jackson, the Fightin’ 27th!) – who will be filling the void left by gubernatorial candidate Roy Herron – is booked to appear on Liberadio(!) on Monday, May 11th.

Following his election on a unanimous vote, Senator Finney said:

“I am humbled by the confidence that my Senate Democratic Caucus colleagues have placed in me today. I will give it my best effort as we continue to work hard on the things that matter most to Tennesseans in these challenging times.

“I am grateful to Senator Herron for his thoughtful and thorough leadership as well as his friendship.”

We’re looking forward to interviewing Senator Finney, one of the members of the talented and energetic emerging young guns sub-caucus.

You read her prize-winning books. You saw her on The Daily Show last night. Now, on Monday, May 4th, just days before the presidential historian visits Nashville to speak to graduating Vanderbilt University seniors and their families during Senior Day on May 7, hear her on Liberadio(!) with Mary Mancini & Freddie O’Connell.

I just hope we can get her to cuss like Stewart did…

The door’s open, Senator Snowe, come on in!

There is no plausible scenario under which Republicans can grow into a majority while shrinking our ideological confines and continuing to retract into a regional party. Ideological purity is not the ticket back to the promised land of governing majorities — indeed, it was when we began to emphasize social issues to the detriment of some of our basic tenets as a party that we encountered an electoral backlash.

It is for this reason that we should heed the words of President Ronald Reagan, who urged, “We should emphasize the things that unite us and make these the only ‘litmus test’ of what constitutes a Republican: our belief in restraining government spending, pro-growth policies, tax reduction, sound national defense, and maximum individual liberty.” He continued, “As to the other issues that draw on the deep springs of morality and emotion, let us decide that we can disagree among ourselves as Republicans and tolerate the disagreement.”!

I guess we’ll have to keep asking the question until we get an answer.

Today, we’ll ask it specifically of Rep. Tony Shipley (R-Kingsport), who, as Jeff Woods reports, believes that it’s a good idea to jeopardize the millions of dollars Tennessee receives from the federal government for family planning services:

A House subcommittee has adopted a bill by our right-wing hero Tony “Wrath of God” Shipley to make it illegal for health-care providers to deny parents immediate access to the medical records of their children. An incestuous father could demand and receive his pregnant daughter’s records. Not surprisingly, this imperils the $6.5 million in federal family planning money that Tennessee receives.

So, Rep. Shipley, if your goal is to eliminate abortion, wouldn’t it be better if you sponsored legislation that would help do that by encouraging organizations such as Planned Parenthood to provide more family planning services and education to individuals who don’t normally have access to them?

And if Rep. Shipley doesn’t have the imagination to think of all the scenarios in which a child’s doctor might need – for the child’s safety – to keep medical records private, then I suggest he go and start talking to the women and doctors of his district.

Campfield de Mayo

Mmmmmmmmm...

Mmmmmmmmm...

HB 0808, a bill sponsored by Rep. Stacey Campfield that would “require students attending public colleges and universities in Tennessee to be lawfully in the United States,” was rolled a week in the Higher Education subcommittee until next Tuesday, May 5th. Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco. de. Mayo.

I’m sure Rep. Campfield believes his bill addresses the “immigration problem.” But it will fix nothing and could lead to more problems.

As long as conditions in southern hemisphere continue to deteriorate, we will have people pushing to come North as economic refugees. They will make the treacherous trip across the border to come here to work and provide a better life – a life they can’t get in their home countries – for their families. They come here to work hard and they contribute to society.

I’m sure Rep. Campfield believes that if his bill passes then these college-age kids will just go home.

But as long as they are here, they’re staying. And instead of continuing to better themselves – and society – by seeking more education, they’ll simply become additional statistics in the categories that we’re all trying to eliminate – the unemployed, the poor, and the incarcerated.

I love me some Kleinheider post titles, but sometimes he just gets it so wrong.

In linking to a post by Ilissa Gold in which she wonders when Democrats in Tennessee will stand up for Democratic values like believing that a child is better off in loving family than in the custody of the state, he writes: Who Will Stand Up For The Lost Cause?

But believing that children belong in nurturing and stable environments regardless of the sexuality or marital status of the committed adults providing the nurture and stability is not a “lost cause.” Nor is it solely a Democratic value.

On January 22, 2009, Quinnipiac University released a poll that found that 55 percent of Florida’s residents favor repealing a state law that prohibits gay and lesbian people from adopting children.

And today, 53% of all Americans support adoption rights for gays and lesbians.

The Life & Age of Woman (New York: Currier & Ives, 1850)

The Life & Age of Woman (New York: Currier & Ives, 1850)

The NY Times says that the case of the “Choose Life” license plate may be headed to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court has turned back at least four requests to hear cases concerning “Choose Life” license plates in recent years. But the volume of litigation on this question and the doctrinal free-for-all it has given rise to in the lower courts have convinced many legal scholars that the court must soon step in.

I know the issue is complicated, but there’s an easy fix. Issue a “Choose Life” plate with a picture collage of all the stages of life instead of issuing one with just a picture of a baby. Then, spread the proceeds to all the different groups that advocate for the health and well-being of humans through all these stages of life.

How many of you SJR127* sponsors are for protecting the lives of innocent children?

All of you?

So wouldn’t it be better if you sponsored legislation that would do something to help lower the frighteningly high infant mortality rate in Tennessee?

(*SJR127 opens a door to amending the State Constitution so that a women seeking an abortion would no longer have privacy protection. The Senate passed SJR0127 24 to 8 on 3/23/09. The House Finance Budget Committee will hear it on Wednesday, 4/29/09, at 11:00 am. Contact your legislator and members of the committee.)

All of you?

So wouldn’t it be better if you sponsored legislation with the intent to reduce and eventually eliminate the number of abortions in the state by allowing organizations such as Planned Parenthood to provide more family planning services and education to individuals who don’t normally have access to them?*

(*HB1756 would take away federal funds from non-profit health care clinics in Tennessee, such as Planned Parenthood, leaving an estimated 12,000 women and men in Tennessee without access to reproductive health education and services. It will be considered on Tuesday, 4/28, in the House Public Health and Family Assistance Subcommittee at 4:00 p.m.. Contact your legislator and members of the committee.)
