The Coopert Report

Last Monday, Congressman Jim Cooper let fly an “I probably shouldn’t tell you this…” on our show that by now I bet he wishes he could take back. Or maybe not. You never can tell with those Wil E. Politicians.

For those of you just joining us, here’s the scoop: On Monday, Congressman Cooper came on the show and said he got “some quiet encouragement from the Obama folks for” voting against the stimulus bill. He also said, “Now, I got in terrible trouble with our leadership because they don’t care what’s in the bill, they just want it pass and they want it to be unanimous.” The next day, the Kleinheider machine over at PostPolitics picked out the money quote and used it in a post speculating about Cooper’s interest in the position of Health and Human Services secretary. Politico picked it up from there, then Kos, ABC, CBS, Fox, Chuck Todd on MSNBC, Politico again, and finally, in yesterday’s White House press briefing, Jake Tapper fired off a question about the remarks to Robert Gibbs.

From Liberadio(!) to the White House press room in about a day. Bizz Bizz Buzz Buzz.

And inevitably there was fallout. The Congressman clarified (“At no point did any member of President Obama’s staff encourage me to vote against the House economic recovery bill”), Robert Gibbs stumbled, and the Speaker, at her weekly press conference, “swatted aside questions” saying “she was more concerned with her caucus as a whole than any single member.”

Speaker Pelosi has also refused an offer to come on the show. (And yes, they knew who were were.)

Congressman Cooper has been accused, so far, of taking a swipe at Speaker Pelosi, not voting with his constituency, angling for a position in the Obama administration, not angling for a position in the Obama administration, and grandstanding. For their part, the White House gave “back-channel assurances” to the Speaker’s office “that the substance of his remarks was untrue.”

Does anyone else hear that cock crowing for the third time? And speaking of barnyard fowl, which came first, the chicken – Congressman Cooper’s somewhat wreckless remarks that could hurt his chances at a position in the Obama administration, or the egg – Cooper already knowing, because he hasn’t “spoken to him [Barack] in months,” that his chances at such a position are nil? The resignation in his voice during Monday’s interview at not being invited to “Barack’s” fiscal stimulus summit suggest the egg:

Well first of all, the summit is entirely Barack’s idea. I haven’t talked to him in months. You know, he did this on his own. I’m not going to be invited to his summit. But I’m glad that he’s taking on some of these major issues because this effects not only the future of the country but his own presidency.

And despite the Congressman’s protestations that he was not grandstanding – because if he were “he could probably pick a more appropriate venue than a small-audience local radio show” – I must assume that Congressman Cooper (and his non-neophyte staff) knew what he was saying and where he was saying it. That said, it would have been nice to hear:

Whether I was grandstanding or not, I was on the only talk show in my home state – which, by the way reaches all of Middle-Tennessee and has been on the air for over 4 years – that will give a platform to progressive ideas. I tried the other talk stations but they were too busy giving part of their 180 hours per week of air time to to Senator Corker, Senator Alexander, Congressman Wamp and Congressman Blackburn.

UPDATE: Hannity, too.

Happy Birthday, Ayn Rand. We Got You a Real Life Toohey.

While channel surfing several nights ago, I landed on The Passion of Ayn Rand, a made for TV movie based on a book that I read while going through my “OMG The Fountainhead is the BEST BOOK EVER!” stage. I wanted to know a bit more about the woman whose book I loved and whose philosophy intrigued me.

What I discovered while reading The Passion is that Rand, although brilliant, was also a psychologically-scarred bully with hypocritical tendencies and a severe lack of empathy. Still loved the book, but her practical application of Objectivism? No so much.

Yet, even to this day, my internal dialogue often labels people in her terms (I use character’s names as shorthand) – Oh, he’s a Howard Roark, or, she’s a Dominique Francon. In my mind, Rush Limbaugh has always been an Ellsworth Toohey.

It made sense to me – the Toohey character is a media figure (a newspaper columnist) who uses his medium to grab power by shaping – through lies and manipulation – public opinion. He courts influential associates and destroys anyone who 1) doesn’t recognize his authority and 2) tries to maintain their integrity. He also represents what Rand hated most – socialism.

So is Rush a socialist?

Well, we know that he doesn’t believe in the collective ownership of anything, so maybe not.

But if we look at Rand’s background – Russian-born, twelve in 1917, her father’s business was confiscated during the Russian Revolution – we get a good sense of her frame of reference. While the Toohey character may represent socialist ideology in general, it also represents the Lenin/Stalin brand specifically. All of Stalins’ least attractive elements are embodied in that one character – the development of a cult of personality, absolute control of the message, the acceptance of bombastic titles, the absolute allegiance of your followers, the destruction of enemies, and an ego the size of a small Midwestern state. It’s these elements that make Rush a Toohey.

This week, in just one incident, we saw Rush in all his Stalinist Toohey glory.* After revealing that he hopes the Obama administration fails in its attempt to revive the country’s economy (this statement alone has it’s own implications), Rush (of the gold-accented tribute to his “Excellence in Broadcasting,”) was called out by the president as well as Republican Congressman Phil Gingrey. Rush’s “Dittoheads,” who worship his words instead of articulating their own, fell in line and vilified Gingrey for daring to express opposition. Gingrey, it should be known, fell in line as well:

As long as I am in the Congress, I will continue to fight for and defend our sacred values. I have actively opposed every bailout, every rebate check, every so called “stimulus.” And on so many of these things, I see eye-to-eye with Rush Limbaugh. Regardless of what yesterday’s headline may have read, I never told Rush to back off. I regret and apologize for the fact that my comments have offended and upset my fellow conservatives—that was not my intent….

Now more than ever, we need to articulate a clear conservative message that distinguishes our values and our approach from those of liberal Democrats who are seeking to move our nation in the wrong direction. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Newt Gingrich, and other conservative giants are the voices of the conservative movement’s conscience. Everyday, millions and millions of Americans—myself included—turn on their radios and televisions to listen to what they have to say, and we are inspired by their words and by their determination. At the end of the day, every member of the conservative movement, from our political commentators and thinkers to our elected officials, share an important and common purpose in advancing the cause of liberty, reining in a bloated federal government, and defending our traditional family values.

Did anyone else just feel a chill up their spine?

*If this angers you, feel free to re-read it while imagining George Bush is still the president and Rush is Michael Moore.

Is the Ice Storm President Obama’s Hurricane Katrina? In a word, no. One difference is, you only have to ask him for help exactly one time and then, you know, you get it.*

President Obama’s quick response to last week’s deadly ice storm that swept through several states – and currently has our neighbor to the north in dire straights – shows what a competent administration can do when they recognize the urgent need to help their people and they’re not looking to place blame (See President George W. Bush telling the world the “I don’t think anyone anticipated a breach of the levees” whopper as well as any one of his revisionist exit interviews.)

Although the problem continues to worsen in some areas – mostly due to treacherous road conditions that make them unnavigable – needed supplies from Mobile Emergency Response Support units (portable radio towers, repeaters and radios; multiple portable KU Band satellite systems and satellite telephones to help officials in areas where cellular towers are inoperative) and FEMA (Incident Response Vehicle, technicians, and radio/repeater equipment, and industrial size generators) are reaching the hardest hit areas.

As hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians lingered in the dark nearly a week after an ice storm wrecked the state’s power grid, National Guard troops prepared to go door-to-door to check on residents….The Federal Emergency Management Agency was also on the ground delivering generators, food and water to residents in need….Utility crews worked feverishly to restore electricity amid the largest state power outage on record…

Even the shelters are getting what they need.

Although it might seem like a fortuitous “gotcha” moment, you really don’t want to compare the disaster relief responses of the two most recent presidential administrations. Seriously, trust me on this one.

As a matter of fact (“Matter of Fact,” the state where the reality-based community lives), the Katrina response was so mangled that President Obama is still dealing with it:

Newly appointed Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano today issued an “active directive” to “require specific department offices and components to work with state and local partners to review and assess current plans to respond to significant medical emergencies and address Hurricane Katrina’s lingering impacts.”

If you still have questions about President Obama’s response to the ice storm in 3 years, let me know ’cause I’d be more than happy to revisit the issue.

*The victims of Hurricane Katrina needed “immediate” help for years, and when they finally got it, some of it was poisonous. And then there’s the long range complications. But I guess the then President Bush will be getting around to that now that he has some more time.
