Liberadio(!) Podcast: June 23, 2008: Sweet (Crude) Mother of God, Parts 1 & 2

Progressive Author David Sirota in Nashville Today

David SirotaOn Monday we interviewed political journalist, nationally syndicated columnist and bestselling author David Sirota about his latest book, The Uprising: An Unauthorized Tour of the Populist Revolt Scaring Wall Street and Washington and the good swift kick Democrats like Lincoln Davis of Tennessee need because, despite polls showing more than 2/3 of the American people want to begin drawing troops out of Iraq, he still thinks that becoming the “anti-war party isn’t beneficial to Democrats in 2008.”

David will be in town tonight at Davis Kidd for a book signing at 7:00 pm.

Then, at 8:00 pm, the Tennessee Alliance for Progress will host a reception for him at the home of Garth and Ann Fundis, 2200 Hampton Avenue, just around the corner from Davis Kidd. The reception will feature music, food, beer and wine and an opportunity to have a conversation with David in an intimate setting. You can reserve a space at the reception by making a $20 donation to TAP on the TAP website a or by making a donation at the door.

Taibbi of Rolling Stone on John McCain’s favorite author, stated as such at his Nashville Town Hall meeting:

Standing at the meeting, I didn’t write Osteen’s name down in my notebook — apparently because my brain refused on some level to accept that McCain had actually said it. Of all the vile, fake, lying-ass, money-grubbing shyster scumbags on the face of this planet, there is perhaps none more loathsome than Osteen, a human haircut with plastic baseball-size teeth who has made a fortune selling the appalling only-in-America idea that terrestrial greed is actually a form of Christian devotion. “God wants us to prosper financially, to have plenty of money, to fulfill the destiny He has laid out for us,” Osteen once wrote. This is the revolting, snake-oil-selling dickhead that John McCain actually chose to pimp as number one on his list of inspirational authors. So much for “go, sell everything you have and give to the poor,” and all that other hippie crap from the New Testament.

So funny I spit club soda out my nose. Tickles.

More important, though, is the subtext of this article. Each time Taibbi asks someone who spews the anti-Obama talking points they got from their sister’s best-friend’s neighbor’s uncle to elaborate on, they are stymied. What we can learn from this is to take the time to press these right-wing echo chamber minions. Don’t roll your eyes and walk away. Ask the “why” and the “what” and “what do you mean, do you have any specifics?” And no, we might not change their minds, but it sure will be fun to watch them squirm.

From the New York Times:

According to data compiled by Andrew Tyndall, a television consultant who monitors the three network evening newscasts, coverage of Iraq has been “massively scaled back this year.” Almost halfway into 2008, the three newscasts have shown 181 weekday minutes of Iraq coverage, compared with 1,157 minutes for all of 2007. The “CBS Evening News” has devoted the fewest minutes to Iraq, 51, versus 55 minutes on ABC’s “World News” and 74 minutes on “NBC Nightly News.” (The average evening newscast is 22 minutes long.)

CBS News no longer stations a single full-time correspondent in Iraq, where some 150,000 United States troops are deployed.

Tell me how again how wearing a flag lapel pin will makes our soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq feel less forgotten? Tell me again how it’s unpatriotic for The News Hour with Jim Lehrer or Nightline to silently scroll through, or read aloud. the name of dead servicemen and women? Tell me again the reason why the Department of Defense refuses to release pictures of the flag-draped coffins of our servicemen and women?

We feel sick too.

Bill Kristol and John Bolton: “We are Not Reading This”

Bill Kristol’s performance yesterday morning on Fox News Sunday was sub-par. His “je ne sais quoi” was missing and his answers were rote. It was almost as if he was reading from a script. Watch as he seems to struggle to remember his “lines”:

Hey, wait a minute! Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton, is spewing the same scary stuff – that President Bush might bomb Iran if his guy doesn’t win the election:

This is fear-mongering at it’s best – bow to the masters! Here’s what they’re saying: “It will be so scary if Senator Obama wins the election – will all his fancy notions of “diplomacy” – that, before he takes office, the current commander-in-chief will have to bomb Iran to make it less scary. But won’t that really make it even more scary? So, are you scared yet?”

It’s all here in our interview with Dr. George Lakoff, one of the founders of the field of cognitive science and the author of Don’t Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values, Frame the Debate, and the just released The Political Mind – Why you can’t Understand 21st Century Politics with an 18th Century Brain: How we are so easily manipulated by right wing propaganda, the definition of “framing,” the institutional and successful use of framing by Republicans, why continue to Democrats ignore framing and do so at their peril, the dearth of empathy in the U.S. and the attempt by Barack Obama’s campaign to awaken it, and which presidential candidate tickles our positive neural pathways. *Giggle*
