I’m Awake

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Okay. Now wouldn’t it be great if everyone thought politics and public policy were this fun? In all seriousness, though, the Fiscal Wake-up Tour was probably up there with last year’s FCC hearing in terms of important public policy events happening in our neck of the woods. To Coop’s credit, the event played to a […]

David Walker and the Fiscal Hurricanes: A Rock Opera

Monday, July 16th, 2007

So today Mary and I went to the most awesome rock show imaginable. The opening act was Mr. Fiscal Responsibility, and he got everybody movin’.

And then, David Walker and the Fiscal Hurricanes, on probably the best — if not the highest grossing; that’s Bonnaroo — tour of 2007 came on. That’s right, the Fiscal Wake-up Tour. And in an act of grace, the main act actually welcomed Coop in for a guest set.

Obama Girl 2: This Time It’s Personal

Monday, July 16th, 2007

First there was Obama Girl, which caught on because it’s a funny, cleverly written bit all wrapped up in a whistle test-approved catchy tune. Then came the rip offs - not funny and just horrible.
Now, thankfully, there’s more from the creative team behind Obama Girl. Funny? Check. Catchy song? Check. Irresistible pop culture references like […]

Mr. Fiscal Responsibility

Monday, July 16th, 2007

I’m sitting here at the Nashville stop of the Fiscal Wake-up Tour organized by the GAO and hosted in Nashville by Congressman Jim Cooper, who, according to Isabel Sawhill of the Brookings Institution, is known in D.C. as Mr. Fiscal Responsibility.
He just announced that George W. Bush will be coming to Nashville on Thursday to […]

Impeachment is Not a Dirty Word

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

The “I” word. Impeachment. Annoying to some. Scary to others. But you can hear the cry of “impeach them” growing louder and louder. Last week, the American Research Group reported that 45% (4 out of 10) of the American people favor the House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against President George W. Bush and 54% […]

Let’s Not Let the Door Hit Us In the A**

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

Last week a White House report found that Iraq has yet to meet many of the benchmarks set out to measure progress. Today, in response to the report and subsequent criticism, Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki said that Iraqi forces “could secure the country on their own ‘any time’ American troops decided to withdraw.”
Hey ho, […]

Congressman Clement & the GOP

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

Enclave Mike asks a good question, “To whom Bob Clement will be beholden if elected Mayor next month?”
According to the City Paper:
Former Democratic Congressman Bob Clement’s mayoral campaign raised more than $150,000 during a fundraiser last night at the home of local businessman and Republican fundraiser Ted Welch.
Campaign co-chairman Larry Woods, when asked why he […]

Congressman Cohen vs. Citizen Miers

Friday, July 13th, 2007

You have to watch Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen (D-the fightin’ 9th!) on the ex-White House Counsel Harriet Miers no-show. Miers was summoned to appear before the House Judiciary Committee and had the nerve not to show up. Why? Because her boyfriend, George Bush, told her not to.
Congressman Cohen sums up the audacity of Miers and […]

The Mayors & The Immigrants

Friday, July 13th, 2007

I agree with Braisted, I don’t see the restrictionist? restrictionism? that Kleinheider sees in David Briley’s immigration policy. There are undoubtedly problems that will arise from 287(g) but until it becomes an unmanageable mess, it’s smart for Briley to work with it. And although “Zero Tolerance for Employers who hire illegal immigrants” raises my eyebrows, […]
