Summary: It’s our Media Matters for America Smackdown with Media Matters Research Fellow, Elbert Ventura. Elbert dispels the myth of the red pickup truck and Fred Thompson’s “authentic” image and “folksy” charm. C’mon, people, the man is a Washington insider, a politician, a lawyer, a lobbyist, and an actor who never actually drove that red pickup himself. Oh, and he doesn’t want to have a beer with you either.

Hey Tman – Do you think Brittney will come back if we stop fighting? *sniff* Mary

  3. Tman says:

Yes, “stood up to Nixon” -”Mr. Butterfield, are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the President?”.

The reason why people like Fred! is that he doesn’t have to pretend to be anybody. That’s why we like him.

You wouldn’t be happy with any Republican candidate regardless, so I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make.

And you better hope that the dems have an answer for Fred! other than “he’s fake!”, because if that’s all you’ve got he might as well start measuring for drapes.

  4. Mary says:

“…stood up to Nixon?” Yeah, he’s been in Washington a really long time. And when he hasn’t been in Washington he’s been in New York or Hollywood. The only way Hollywood Fred can get elected is to pretend he’s someone he’s not.

  5. Tman says:

You don’t “debate” Michael Moore, you laugh at him. And most people I know found Fred’s response to Moore hilarious. Moore will do a documentary about US healthcare by going to Cuba, but completely ignores a fellow filmmaker who is held without trial in a horrible prison complex where he is regularly tortured. This is why it is not worth debating Moore, the same reason why you don’t try to teach a pig to sing.

Are you serious is saying that the guy who stood up to Nixon and helped bring down one of the most corrupt governments in history is afraid of debating a lighweight gasbag like Moore? The guy who took down Ray Blanton?

    Please.

  6. Mary says:

Hollywood Fred is afraid of debate. When asked to debate health care with Michael Moore he refused and instead created a cheap and meaningless video that didn’t even address the issue. Oh, and it wasn’t funny either. If you elect FDT we’ll get another 4 years of disastrous smoke and mirror governing instead of thoughtfully hashed out and enacted public and foreign policy. No, thank you.

And in regurgitating his resume you left off Member of the Advisory Board of the Scooter Libby Legal Defense Trust.

  7. Tman says:

Fred! would eviscerate any democratic contender in a debate. I can’t wait to see what he’ll do to either Edwards, Obama or Hillary. Either one wouldn’t stand a chance.

You’re basing your judgement on a movie? Ignoring things like the fact that he’s a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a former member of the United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission and a Visiting Fellow with the American Enterprise Institute does not make them go away.

Fred! is light years more experienced than the other candidates, which is why you are trying to debunk him now, before it gets close.

The best confirmation of this for me is two things. One, many of my liberal friends like him more than the current crop of democratic nominees, and two, most liberals are hyperventilating about him like chicken little.

All you’ve done is confirm this for me. Thanks!

  8. Mary says:

You’re the one who should be nervous if you think “Hollywood” Fred Thompson is going to save your anemic slate of Republican candidates. Have you seen “Curly Sue?”

  9. Tman says:

    Nervous?

Liberals should be. Fred! is your worst election nightmare.

And my friends may have not had a beer with him, but I know people who have shared a coffee with him at Bongo Java.
