Obama/Coop ‘08?

So, last week, someone conveniently slid a copy of talking points for some high profile endorsement-seeking calls by Barack Obama under Howard Fineman’s door. Whose name shows up prominently on the relatively short list? Why, none other than our very own Congressman Jim Cooper’s! Anyone care to speculate on whether an endorsement could be forthcoming from our local Blue Dog?

In my opinion, this would be a great match. Cooper is an avowed deficit hawk and well-regarded as a policy intellect in Congress. Regarded as a moderate, Cooper’s endorsement would give some serious finance heft to Obama’s burgeoning policy credibility, especially after recent criticisms about his rhetoric-heavy, wonk-light speeches and events have dogged his campaign.

Still, Obama wins big here. Does Coop? Crossing Clinton from Congress takes some serious guts. Maybe Coop, like me, is interested in moving beyond the Bush-Clinton era altogether. And maybe he’s an optimist who, like John Seigenthaler and me, believes in hope! I’ve met Jim Cooper’s mother, and I think she would be proud! So tell mama, Coop! And tell the rest of us, too!

UPDATE: Well, it looks like Coop did tell mama! (hat tip: ACK v. Whitehouse)

Why I Prefer Brady to Heston

These days, it’s hard to examine the headlines and find anything that Alberto Gonzales has done right over at the Dept. of Just Us. But I actually found one. To my complete surprise, Alberto Gonzales signaled his support for a bill that seeks further preventive measures — including the intervention of the DoJ — regarding suspected terrorists attempting to acquire guns. I mean, who in their right mind would oppose this?

Well, I have never been one to suspect the leadership of the NRA of being in their “right minds,” but they are now asserting that suspected terrorists need stronger Second Amendment rights.

… just five days after Gonzales signaled his support, the NRA fired off a letter to the Attorney General and told him to “RECONSIDER AND OPPOSE THIS PROPOSAL.” In his letter, Chris W. Cox, NRA’s executive director, said the bill deprives law-abiding americans of their constitutional rights without due process and said even though the Lautenberg legislation allows for an appeal, that is not enough.

That makes sense. Surely it makes sense to go out of our way to ensure that the people suspected of being in the most dangerous class of humanity should be able to purchase guns.

As we grow the laundry list of gun nut absurdities, I hope we continue making progress to a time when the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is as significant an electoral force as the NRA. Barring that, maybe the leadership of the NRA will become moderated over time by its membership to the point where they are not nuts.

I Have Schadenfreude and I Feel Fine

President Bush’s approval rating has dropped to 28 percent in a Newsweek poll released this weekend, the lowest of any president in a generation. Am I happy? Oh yes, so very happy.

If these poll numbers mean that we, the people, finally mistrust the Bush administration and believe it to be full of hubris, stubborn, and unwilling to admit mistakes then yes, I have the schadenfreude. If they mean that Alberto Gonzales, Paul Wolfowitz, Condoleeza Rice and Karl Rove are one step closer to removal from their positions of power then yes, I have the schadenfreude. If they mean that President Bush will rightly go down in history as one of the worst presidents ever then yes, I have the schadenfreude. If they mean that more of us will participate in the democratic process in the fall of 2008 just to affect positive change then yes, I have the schadenfreude. If they mean, as House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio suggests, that “public support among Republicans for President Bush’s Iraq policy could crumble in the fall without clear success,” then yes, I have the schadenfreude. If they mean that President Bush will have to work with congress to bring an end to this war sooner rather than later then yes, I most certainly do have the schadenfreude.

Meet the Man Tonight

Posted by Liberadio(!) on May 3, 2007 under Uncategorized | Read the First Comment

Last Saturday, we interviewed Leah Flynn and Marcus Bagwell, eleventh graders and two of the organizers of tonight’s “Meet the Man” Youth-Led, Youth-Issues Mayoral Forum.

The forum is tonight from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., at East Literature Magnet School (map), and will give us the opportunity to hear the six candidates for Nashville’s next mayor answer questions from the youdth.

Young’ins bring your parents. Parents bring your rugrats. It should be one of the more interesting of the many forums Nashville is hosting for the candidates. The event is free and open to the public and even if you’re not a munchkin of voting age, come hear the next mayor of Nashville talk about issues you care about - education, safety, the environment, and others.

Listen to our interview with Leah Flynn and Marcus Bagwell and visit teenedge.com for more info.
