Meet Steagle? Mission Accomplished!

Happy New Year!

During the break I traveled to the heartland, Saginaw, MI, to visit my brother, Bob, and his family. Bob, besides being my favorite brother, also happens to be the GM/Coach of the Saginaw Spirit, the junior hockey team featured heavily by Stephen Colbert on his show, The Colbert Report. Go, Bob!

The backstory is that when Stephen Colbert heard that the Spirit were having a “name the mini-mascot competition” he rallied his Colbert Nation to vote to have the little eaglet named after him. The Spirit website was overwhelmed with votes and voilà!, Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle (complete with Colbert’s trademark glasses) was born.

Then Freddie and I had Bob on the show last October to discuss our competing mascots, our The Colbeagle™ vs. his Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle.

Steagle is a fine little dude, though, smaller than Sammy Spirit, the Spirit’s original mascot, and with his super-hero cape (bearing “Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle” lettering) he totally looks like the “little brother” dressing up and playing at being a mascot. It really is adorable, especially if you like that disproportionate ginormous-fuzzy-head-and-feet-to-body-ratio thing. And I do. A lot.

It’s all quite a happy coincidence since I was addicted to - some (Freddie? My husband? Anyone who listens to the show?) might even say obsessed with - The Colbert Report’s satirical approach to the news before this very personal connection was made.

So I was determined this trip to have my picture taken with Steagle and watched his every move during the game and between periods. Needless to say, and even though I decided against wearing the cod piece, my mission was accomplished!
