“Congress Tells Auditor in Iraq to Close Office”, By James Glanz (New York Times)
“Investigations led by a Republican lawyer named Stuart W. Bowen Jr. in Iraq have sent American occupation officials to jail on bribery and conspiracy charges, exposed disastrously poor construction work by well-connected companies like Halliburton and Parsons, and discovered that the military did not properly track hundreds of thousands of weapons it shipped to Iraqi security forces.” And he just got fired.

It has instead become the epitome of public neglect, perpetuated by a class divide so permeated by race that it mocks the bedrock principles of the American Promise.”

How About Some Fries With That “Stay the Course?”

Posted by Mary Mancini on November 2, 2006 under Uncategorized | Be the First to Comment

Summary: Yesterday when asked “what’s your prayer for the country?” President Bush said, “My prayer is peace. My prayer is that this world be peaceful so that children can grow up understanding the benefits of freedom.” If we were President Bush we’d ask for something that might actually get some results. Like, forgiveness for being a bald-faced hypocrite. And the latest from the officers in Iraq is that resistance to deadlines is weakening. Good to know. Now can we start a dialogue about a plan for Iraq without being accused of wanting to “cut and run?” No? OK, then what you got? Cheney and Rumsfeld get to stay through 2008? Nice. How about some fries with that “stay the course?” And you do know that it’s Harold Ford, Jr. and not Bob “Stay the” Corker who’s excited about discussion and ideas and dialogue, right? (31:12 14MB)

Moved? Didn’t Change Your Address? Confused About Where to Vote?

Posted by Mary Mancini on under Uncategorized | Be the First to Comment

Here’s the dealio with voting if you’ve moved within Davidson County. Remember, early voting ends today at 6pm and election day is next Tuesday, November 7.

You can change your address up to five days before the election but if you don’t make it to one of the early voting sites today to do it you still can change your address on election day using “failsafe voting.”

• If you’ve moved within Davidson County in the last 90 days, you can vote early with no problem by just filling out a change of address form at the early voting site (early voting ends today, Thursday, November 2, at 6pm).

• If you’ve moved within Davidson County in the last 90 days and have not formally changed your address with the election commission, and do not vote at an early voting site, you can still vote on Nov. 7, but will have to either go to one of 5 “super sites” (see list below) or else go to 2 locations—first to their old polling place, and then to the new polling place.

• If you’ve moved more than 90 days ago and are still in Davidson County, you can vote as above (either at any early voting site by Thursday, or on Nov. 7 at a “super voting site” or by going to your old polling place and then to the new one).

• If you’ve moved more than 90 days ago to another county, you cannot vote in this election in Davidson County. Please contact the election commission for your new county for more information about registering.

The five “super voting sites” are:
1) Davidson County Election Commission (Howard School), 800 2nd Ave. South
2) Edmondson Pike Library, 5501 Edmondson Pike
3) Green Hills Library, 3701 Benham Ave.
4) Hermitage Library, 3700 James Kay Lane
5) Madison Library, 610 Gallatin Pike South

All you need to vote is your Voter Registration card. If you do not have your voter registration card, you can use your driver’s license or anything with your signature on it as a valid form of id.

Call 862-8800 if you have any questions. You can view a sample ballot here

Pay No Attention to the Kerry Behind the Curtain

Posted by Mary Mancini on November 1, 2006 under Uncategorized | Be the First to Comment

Summary: Today we go over the reasons why you should vote, why you should help to get out the vote, and why you should help to get out the vote for Harold Ford, Jr.*. Also, who is this mythical Democratic candidate that Republicans say will raise your taxes your taxes and make you less safe? Repeat after us, “He does not exist.” You know what does exist? Missing weapons. As in, missing U.S. weapons. As in, 1 of every 25 weapons the military bought for Iraqi security forces is missing. That’s 14,000 missing weapons. And Freddie suggests that John Kerry zip it while Barack Obama can keep right on talking.

*Ford says, “Whatever the intent, Senator Kerry was wrong to say what he said. He needs to apologize to our troops…[but] words don’t alter the fact that the stay-the-course strategy pursued by President Bush and supported by Bob Corker isn’t working. We need a new direction in Iraq. I know how hard our troops work, and the sacrifices they make, for our freedoms. They deserve a plan for victory as good as they are, and as senator I intend to see they get one.”
