President Bush is this close to a veto – his first one ever! Here’s a fun list. Let’s call it “Some bills President Bush didn’t veto”:
Bill Cutting Vital Programs like Student Loans. President Bush will veto stem cell legislation, but he did not veto a plan making American students pay the price for his Administration’s out-of-control spending.
Big Oil Giveaway. President Bush will veto stem cell legislation, but he did not veto a give-away to oil and gas companies of $6 billion, and to coal companies of $9 billion.
Terri Schiavo Bill. President Bush will veto stem cell legislation, but he did not veto a bill pandering to the right wing.
Drug Company Giveaway. President Bush will veto stem cell legislation, but he did not veto a give-away to drug companies that, unbeknownst to Americans at the time, will cost over $1.2 trillion. [Washington Post, 2/9/05]
Tax Cuts for Privileged Few. President Bush will veto stem cell legislation, but he did not veto tax cuts passed in 2001 – and again in 2002 and 2003 — that gave away our tax receipts to billionaires and contributed to a revenue shortfall of $1.8 trillion between 2003 and 2006 compared with the 2001 forecast.
